As more stories of the TSA’s increasingly-invasive “security” procedures continue to hit the media, the organization is getting more bad publicity than ever before. Considering the TSA is now openly allowing agents to stick their hands down the pants of fliers, it is logical for citizens to be upset.
What has received even more bad press than the TSA’s pat-down procedures, however, is the TSA’s naked body scanners. In addition to completely annihilating our privacy, body scanners are also a threat to our health. Here are 5 of the worst things about naked body scanners:
1. They Could Give You Cancer.
Scientists from Columbia University found that the dose emitted by the body scanners could be up to 20 times higher than previously thought. Dr. David Brenner, head of Columbia University’s center for radio-logical research, warns that children and people with gene mutations whose bodies are less able to repair damage to their DNA are most at risk.
If there are increases in cancers as a result of irradiation of children, they would most likely appear some decades in the future. It would be prudent not to scan the head and neck, said Brenner.
2. Your Naked Image can be Easily Saved and Uploaded to the Internet.
The TSA claims that the images are to be immediately deleted, but Gizmodo has recently released 100 leaked body scans from the machines to prove it can be done.
3. They Can see it All, Including Tampons and Other Personal Items.
While they can already see you fully naked and save your images, they can also see the most intimate things you are carrying with you. Recently-appointed TSA head John S. Pistole told the New York Times that the scanners can also detect things such as sanitary napkins. Don’t worry though, he claims that “are expected to exercise some discretion.” You are given zero privacy when it comes to traveling.
4. They will Search Anyone, Besides Congress.
The TSA will search everyone, including children. The elderly are not exempt either, as the TSA have been known to forcibly remove them from their wheelchairs in order to search them. At least they don’t discriminate?
5. If you refuse to go through them, you are treated like a Prisoner of War
Upon refusing to go through one of the naked body scanners, the TSA agents will begin to yell “opt-out!” Causing a scene and forcing everyone to stare you in the airport, this first technique is alienating enough. This is only the beginning, however. After you feel like a terrorist, despite simply exercising your right to reject the scanners, you will be subject to an invasive pat-down. What does this pat-down entail? Well, if you’re wearing what the agents determine to be baggy clothing, then they will stick their hands down your pants.
If you’re not, then they will perform a pat-down on you that is worse than the military pat-down of prisoners in Afghanistan. They will use their hands to “search” your entire body, including your genitals. Children are not excluded from this process. They also “randomly” select fliers for this routine, with multiple news sources highlighting the fact that attractive women are often the ones chosen.
