Value of Physical Security

“Physical security protects people, data, equipment, systems, facilities and company assets”. Methods that physical security protects these assets are through “site design and layout, environmental components, emergency response readiness, training, access control, intrusion detection, and power and fire protection”. Business continuity or disaster recovery plans are required to reduce business interruption in times of natural disaster, explosion or sabotage. One security professional cannot cover the entire spectrum of physical security.

Professionals that work in this space do not always have a holistic understanding of physical security because of specialized variables and components that are needed to secure an organization. Individuals often “specialize in specific fields, such as secure facility construction, risk assessment and analysis, secure data centre implementation, fire protection, intrusion detection systems, closed-circuit television (CCTV) implementation, personnel emergency response, training, legal, and regulatory aspects of physical security, and so on”.

Physical security teams must implement a security program that balances security measures and safety concerns. Physical security should always use what is called a “defence in depth” approach to reinforce security through different controls.

Surveillance aircraft

Surveillance aircraft is an aircraft used for surveillance—collecting information over time. They are operated by military forces and other government agencies in roles such as intelligence gathering, battlefield surveillance, airspace surveillance, and observation border patrol and fishery protection. This article concentrates on aircraft used in those roles, rather than for traffic monitoring, law enforcement and similar activities.
Surveillance aircraft usually carry no armament, or only limited defensive armament. A surveillance aircraft does not necessarily require high-performance capability or stealth characteristics. It may be a modified civilian aircraft. Surveillance aircraft have also included moored balloons and unmanned aerial vehicles.
A little more than a decade ago the border patrol started using surveillance drones. The technology and the mission were a perfect match, and few did any worrying—almost no one objects to closely monitoring at border.
The belief that the government was using drones to conduct domestic surveillance inside the United States, though, could get a person labelled a paranoid lunatic as recently.

The Security Plan:

The primary management tool for security preparedness at any duty station is the security plan, which details responsibilities and actions to be taken in response to emergency situations, such as political unrest or natural disasters.
During emergencies, even simple tasks can be difficult to accomplish, thus the security plan should consist of a series of well-thought-out options which can be drawn upon depending on the situation. These options must be simple to execute, flexible and continuously updated as the situation requires.
Although the options should be kept simple, the degree of detail in the plan should be as specific as possible. Vague instructions regarding possible means of evacuation, routes, etc. can be more dangerous than helpful as they offer a false sense of security and may be difficult, if not impossible, to implement in event of emergency. Well-trained wardens (for urban areas) and area security coordinators (for rural areas) are critical to an effective security plan. The Designated Security Official should, from time to time, exercise the security plan, or aspects of the security plan, in a simulation mode to determine if the plan is viable and the participants understand their responsibilities. During such simulations, care should be taken not to cause panic among staff or to offend government authorities.
A copy of the current security plan must be provided to the Security Coordinator and updated annually. The plan will be reviewed and kept on file for reference and use during emergencies.

Benefits of CCTV

The benefits that closed circuit television (#CCTV) technology has brought to the world are plentiful. People have enjoyed a greater amount of security in their homes, businesses have been able to protect their establishments and provide their customers with a higher level of protection and #Security and Public places such as airports, banks, military facilities, casinos & more... have also greatly benefited by preventing possible crimes from happening.
1. Deterrence – The thought of knowing that they are being watched and monitored keeps away the would be offenders. It is only a stupid burglar or a thieve that will not realize that a home or business under CCTV surveillance is not worth the risk and therefore not a good target. The benefits the use of CCTV surveillance system brings to crime reduction and as a source of evidence can never be underestimated.
2. Fear reduction – Most people have often confessed that the presence of CCTV cameras makes them feel safer. Feeling safe gives peace of mind to Business owners, employees and homeowner that not only are their businesses or property safe, but also are their loved ones.
3. Prosecution – CCTV evidence can be vital in prosecution of offenders (thieves, terrorist, vandals, arsonists, looters, burglars, and any other criminals). It’s much easier to identify and initiate legal procedures against offenders with visual evidence from the CCTV footage. This on its own provides an ultimate criminal deterrent that is both visible and effective. Almost all the offenders were identified using CCTV systems and were successfully prosecuted with the use of CCTV evidence.
4. Security and Surveillance. You rarely need eyes in the back of your head these days. Strategically placed cameras can be both monitored and recorded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Digital recorders can record all your cameras for up to 3 months or even more if you need it. Remote monitored systems allow you or manned guards to watch over your premises from anywhere in the world using a phone or computer.
5. Increase Business Efficiency and Improve Profitability: In addition to providing a safer environment for employees and business owners, CCTV security system can greatly improve business efficiency and profitability. Thieves and shoplifters are less likely to strike a business that is protected by closed circuit television cameras.

Indian Temple Security

A trite wise saying suffices that prevention is better than cure. Proactive-ness should be the watchword of every place of worship, nay organizations.
1.Establishing a full-fledged Security ‘Ministry’ or Department/Committee must be a priority for all places of worship. The Security Ministry or whatever name it is called, must be peopled with members of the congregation that have extensive security background.Basic first responded training and knowledge of basic first aid will help. A security consultant can be retained and private security operatives hired if need be.
2. A detailed Security Policy is important. A security policy is a continuously updated template that figures out, outlines how the organization plans to protect its people and properties.
3. Places of worship should formulate a comprehensive emergency and evacuation plans, lock down procedures and scrutinize the aforementioned procedures routinely in response to plausible natural or man-made misadventure.
4. The security department must strive to organize periodic security awareness program: seminar, symposium or briefings for members of the congregation.
5. Carry out a routine comprehensive risk assessment and vulnerability surveys of the place of worship vis-à-vis location of the place of worship and crime demographic, identifying potential hazards, how secured the access or entry points are, fencing, untrimmed shrubs/trees, inventory of equipment among others.

6. A rigorous background check or screening must be done on staff of the security department, volunteers, those taking care of children and those responsible for money/finances.

Crowd Security

Natural and man-made disasters give quite a well reason for casualties and injuries like collapse of a building, landslides, exposure to harmful chemicals, etc. but there is a very unpredictable man-made disaster where people losing their life seems to be an unreasonable loss. It is the stampede that can happen in a crowded event. Stampede is a word that refers to animals while they flee wildly in panic condition. But the same applies to the humans when in crowd, they start behaving by animal instinct. Thus for a crowd, stampede is a situation when individuality is lost and individuals behave according to the crowd to get into a safer place. Stampede is a self destructing human wave i.e. a panic situation ,like fire or rumours, which starts at highly dense crowded area and like a wave humans run to escape in a disorderly way. The deaths usually occur due to suffocation and choking. The physically strong people might escape but it is the weaker section like women, children and old who get caught up.

India is a country which is famous for religious festivals and strong faith of people in religion is a call for huge number of gathering in such events. The increasing population, traditions and beliefs, ease of transportation system, open for all system, are the few causes of mass gatherings. This is in a way related to risk of stampede disasters.

Level of Security For Forest Service

What level of Security is required for Forest Service buildings and sites?
All Forest Service facilities face security risks, but not the same risks. Forest Service buildings and sites vary from log cabins accessible only by trail to District offices in small towns to research laboratories in urban areas. Possible threats range from tornadoes to chemical releases to theft of snowmobiles by joy-riding teenagers or even arson by eco-terrorists (intentional acts). The threats faced at each location are different, so the required security measures also differ.
The first step in addressing physical security requirements is to figure out what threats affect the site and how vulnerable the site is to those threats. The Threat and Vulnerability Assessments section of the Physical Security Toolbox developed by MTDC explains threats and vulnerability assessments. The Physical Security section explains how to conduct a vulnerability assessment. A good starting point for a Forest Service vulnerability assessment is the report that should have been done on each unit of building risk level and whether each structure meets the minimum security standards for that risk level.

Port Facility Security

Ports are important for the support of economic activities in the hinterland since they act as a crucial connection between sea and land transport. The safety of port facilities, port workers and the surrounding community, and the protection of the environment are interconnected and synergistic elements in the management and operation of today’s ports. Therefore, they are an integral part of an effective Port Management System.

Ports have an ever-increasing responsibility nationally and internationally with regard to policy, legal instruments and objectives covering maritime safety, protection of the marine environment, and sustainable development.

The Port Facility Security Officer is responsible for the preparation of the Port Facility Security Plan. Like the Ship Security Plan, the Port Facility Security Plan shall indicate the minimum operational and Physical Security measures the Port Facility shall take at all times, i.e. while operating at security level .

1. The plan should also indicate the additional, or intensified, security measures the Port Facility can take to move to security level
2. Furthermore the plan should indicate the possible preparatory actions the Port Facility could take to allow prompt response to the instructions that may be issued by the authorities responding at security level 3 to a security incident or threat.

Fire Safety Training

“If you wish to control a problem, you must know more about the problem than anyone else and if you need to know more about the problem, you must coin a terminology, a lexicon, that allows you to understand it and not use imperial rhetoric.”

School Bus Security

Most parents feel a mixture of trepidation and excitement when their children start school. The anxiety is only heightened when young kids must start travelling to school by bus. This fear is not without basis, given the number of highly publicized cases about sex crimes committed against children in school buses. School-bus fears also tend to revolve around images of horrible wrecks and accidents, though children are most likely to get hurt during routine pickup and drop.
While your fears may never be completely allayed it helps tremendously to be aware of some safety strategies and practices to protect your child. Equip your young ones with this knowledge too so that they are able to stay out of harm's way.
DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE
1. Ensure that the bus has a contract with the school and has more than one woman attendant on the vehicle.
2. As far as possible, do not allow your child to spend any time alone on the bus. If your child gets off at the last stop, make sure you (or another reliable adult) are at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus arrives.
3. Help your child memorize your telephone/mobile/office number as well as your address in case of an emergency. While it may be difficult for him to contact you from the bus, it is still a good thing to assure him that he can reach you at any time. You can write these details on a card and keep it in his school bag.
4. Explain to your child about good touch and bad touch. Also, let them know that they shouldn't let anyone touch them in inappropriate places. Sex education as early as possible can help protect your child from being sexually exploited.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHILD
5. Be at the bus stop five minutes prior to the arrival of the bus. Never run to or from the bus.
6. Wait at your designated stop in a safe place, back from the side of the road.
7. Don't speak loudly or make loud noises that could distract the driver.
8. Don't put your head, arms or hands out the window.
9. Never speak to strangers at the bus stop and never get into the car with a stranger. Always go straight home and tell mummy or daddy if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up.
10. Never throw things on the bus or out the windows.
11. Never play with the emergency exits.
12. If there is an emergency, listen to the driver and follow instructions.
13. NEVER EVER get off on a different stop! Even if a friend says it's ok to come over and visit.
14. No getting up and down, turning around or putting legs in the aisle. It's unsafe to do these things in a moving bus.
15. Never run behind, beside or in front of the school bus to pick something up. If you bend down to pick something up, the driver may not see you.
16. Use the handrails to avoid falls. When exiting the bus, be careful that clothing with drawstrings and bags with straps don't get caught in the handrails or doors.

Mobile ATM

The millions of Indians who lined up at banks over the past week probably wish an ATM would just come to them.

Mobile ATMs are offering some relief to residents of Bengaluru and Delhi as people across the country are running out of cash.

Since Prime Minister banned 500 and 1,000 rupee notes, a shock move aimed at combating corruption and tax evasion, banks have been besieged by crowds trying to exchange their defunct cash. ATMs, stocked with only 100 rupee notes (about $1.50), are emptying within hours and tempers are fraying.
The mobile ATM has been used over the past five years to bring banking to rural areas. But senior official decided to deploy it in the city in the evenings to address what he described as a "crisis."

Over the last two days, the bus has processed over 1,600 transactions worth about 3.2 million rupees ($47,000).With millions still lining up for hours around the country to withdraw new notes, and nearly half the country's 200,000 ATMs not working, the bus is just a drop in the ocean. But senior official says the mobility it provides allows his bank to target the most chaotic localities
