Road Traffic Accidents – A Public Health Issue

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) have emerged as an important public health issue which needs to be tackled by a multi-disciplinary approach. The trend in RTA injuries and death is becoming alarming in countries like India. The number of fatal and disabling road accident happening is increasing day by day and is a real public health challenge for all the concerned agencies to prevent it. Awareness creation, strict implementation of traffic rules, and scientific engineering measures are the need of the hour to prevent this public health catastrophe. A three-layer audit before new roads are constructed, and star ratings for existing roads in the city are in the offing under Delhi government newly drafted Delhi Road Safety Policy regarding road safety.                                                  
The policy states that there will be a road safety audit of all roads in a phased manner, with two years of the policy coming into effect, to identify road engineering and signage defects. Sustainable improvements, the policy says, will be carried out in the road network of by taking necessary actions such as road markings, putting up speed limit signage, warning signs, and redesigning.
